Ascent

This project is a record of my life experiences when I moved from Georgia to New York, showcasing the very different landscapes of two cities. This time in my life marks a major shift for me. Transitioning from being a student to entering the workforce, and moving from a calm small town to a bustling city, it's all been quite the journey upwards. I use animation and design to document this period full of change and energy.

Savannah is a coastal city in Georgia, characterized by its lush greenery and rich history. The neatly planned squares within its streets are a distinctive feature, all shaded by huge live oak trees adorned with Spanish moss hanging from every branch.

In the transitional scenes, I use a suitcase as a symbol of moving, transforming cars into stickers on the case. The design elements blend the styles of both places, incorporating the graceful, historical fonts of Georgia and sticker shapes reminiscent of Spanish moss, as well as the bold fonts commonly seen on subway tiles in New York. I also include iconic elements of New York City, such as taxis and the Statue of Liberty. This way, I express the process of relocation metaphorically, with many hints about the two places.

The scene in New York includes numerous iconic buildings, fire escapes hanging from the facades, bridges spanning rivers, and subways. Inspired by a famous black-and-white photograph, "Lunch atop a Skyscraper," I incorporated elements of massive structures and construction hooks, with a large apple resting atop a steel beam. I had many classic elements of New York come to mind. Selecting suitable, intuitive, and more localized elements for the design is crucial in creating this scene.
